The move followed Transport Engineering Design Incorporation’s proposal on allowing some military airports to use civil services in the National Airport Development Plan by 2030, including Thanh Son Military Airport in the southern central province of Ninh Thuan and Bien Hoa Military Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai.

Under the proposal, Thanh Son and Bien Hoa airports would have an annual capacity of three million and 10 million passengers respectively. Ninh Thuan and Dong Nai need to seek investors for the two projects, and would not use the state budget.

However, according to the CAAV, it is important to take careful consideration in regards to the Bien Hoa Airport project to avoid affecting Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City and the future Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai.

The CAAV assessed that Ninh Thuan boasts great potential for tourism development. In 2019, the province attracted 2.35 million tourists and the figure is expected to rise to six million by 2030 and 10-15 million by 2050.

Ninh Thuan has been forecasted to welcome around 1.5 million air travellers by 2030. Meanwhile, Thanh Son Military Airport has available land which is suitable for civil activities as well.

Vietnam would have 28 airports by 2030 and 31 by 2050, comprising 14 international and 17 domestic facilities, according to the Transport Ministry’s airport development plan.
