(ĐN)- The Biogas Programme for Animal Husbandry Sector, currently in its second phase, started in 2003 under the cooperation between the Vietnamese and Netherlands governments. It was implemented by the Department of Animal Husbandry of Viet Nam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development with technical assistance from the Netherlands Development Organisation SNV.

The first phase of the programnme was applied to 18,000 households with biogas plants built during the 2003-2005 period. In phase two, which has been carried out since 2006 and will end in 2010, the programme will be carried out in 64 provinces countrywide with 150,000 biogas plants to be built. The programme has helped boost economic development, save energy and reduce environmentally toxic gases, improve the living environment, generate jobs and alleviate rural poverty.
Since 2003 until now, 2,628 domestic biogas plants have been constructed in Dong Nai province. Local authorities said that about 310 additional biogas plants are expected to be built in Dong Nai in 2008.
