
President Nguyen Minh Triet hailed domestic textile and garment firms for their contribution to the countrys modernisation in an award ceremony to honour 42 outstanding businesses of Vietnams textile and garment industry this year at Ha Noi Opera House last night.

President Triet said the textile and garment industry has actively integrated into the global economy and still strives for further development despite its small quotas and high import taxes. Industry exports have reached US$5bil per year.
The president noted that the industry still suffers shortcomings and difficulties as the country prepares for admission to the World Trade Organisation.
The State leader asked the industry to make every effort to stand on their own feet.
He said he believed certain companies would be able to overcome their shortcomings and prosper during the countrys modernisation and industrialisation process.
Le Quoc An, chairman of Viet Nam Textile and Garments Association and head of the events organising board, said the 42 companies were given prizes for achieving excellent results in business, market development, export and brand name development, environment management and information technology application.
An said last year the industrys export turnover stood at $4.8bil; this number is expected to increase by 20% in 2006 to reach $5.8bil.
Winners include: Viet Tien Garment Import Export Company, Nha Be Garment Joint Stock Company, Phong Phu Corporation, Dong Nai Garment Joint Stock Company, Phuong Dong Garment Joint Stock Company, Scavi Vietnam Company, Coats Phong Phu Company, Saigon 3 Garment Joint Stock Company, Garment 10 Company and Hanosimex.
Viet Tien Garment Import Export Company and Phong Phu Corporation were highlighted for superior achievements.
Phong Phu Corporation last year recorded a revenue of VND1.7tril with exports reaching $47mil. This is the third year Viet Tien Company has won the prize. In 2005, the company earned a revenue of VND1.6tril and obtained an export revenue of $152mil.
This is the third annual selection of outstanding textile and garment companies with a view to honour companies with high production ability and effective business operations in controlling domestic and export markets, said Le Quoc An.
