Viet Nam’s Eastern Asia Commercial Bank (EAB) has won ZDnet Asia’s Smart50 award for its use of information technology to enhance workflow and support delivery of services to customers.

EAB is the first commercial joint stock bank in Viet Nam to receive the Smart50 award, which was created by ZDnet Asia to honour the 50 Asian companies making best use of IT in business.

Established in 1992, EAB started a technology reform in 2002 with the FlexCube core banking technology, which can process dozens of transactions per second at its 45 branches, 250 ATMs (automated teller machines) and 300 point-of-sales systems in the country.

In cooperation with Tomcom, VietCard and IIex, the bank also introduced new services such as Internet Banking and mobile banking and launched SMS banking (short message service) to help staff quickly pick out abnormalities in network traffic.
