(ĐN)- Dong Nai Reproductive Health Care Centre has organised for the first time a child nutrition education program to improve nutrition knowledge for mothers in Xuan Dong Commune of Cam My district. The program drew the participation of about 250 mothers and fathers and their children under the age of 5.

The participants were guided how to prepare healthy nutritious meals for children and introduced to the ingredients required. They were also provided with counseling on normal children’s diseases.

Besides, the children were provided with free medical checks-up and free milk and meals.

According to reports, improper feeding is a direct cause of malnutrition and deficiencies of vitamin A, iron and iodine. However, poverty is the major cause of malnutrition in rural areas. Xuan Dong is a rural commune where most of population is farmers, they have less time to take care of their babies so many kids are not being fed correctly, leading to malnutrition and weight loss. Therefore, the program has been launched to provide the parents with basic knowledge on nutrition and on how to help their kids put on weight.

During the past time, Cam My district’s Xuan Dong commune has made many efforts to reduce the malnutrition rate among under five children to 9.81 percent from 11.26 percent in 2007
