A South Korean film crew is now in HCM City to make a documentary on the life of President Ho Chi Minh based on a script written by well-known writer Bang Hyun Suk.

The 60-minute documentary, Viet Nam’s Star – Ho Chi Minh, is the first Korean film on President Ho and its director Hong Soon Chul said: "Prompted by his deep respect for President Ho Chi Minh, Bang pored over various books and documents on the life and times of the President before writing the script."

Bang is also writing a 500-page biography of President Ho and has visited Viet Nam many times since 1995 to look up documents.

The director Hong, who is also a professor at the Korean National University of Arts, said further: "Our documentary is a major challenge because we want to describe Ho Chi Minh to help young people in Korea understand the leadership, spirit, and revolutionary cause of the greatest leader in Viet Nam’s history."

"Through the documentary we also want to boost friendship between Viet Nam and Korea."

He is well-known in South Korea as an experienced director of documentary and historical films.

On its first day in the city on Monday, the crew met officials of several museums including the Ho Chi Minh Museum, the South Vietnamese Women’s Museum, and the War Remnants Museum.

"We’re impressed by the huge treasure of valuable documents and relics about President Ho Chi Minh the museums have," Hong said.

After HCM City the crew would film in several locations in the north and south of the country, he said.

"We’ll interview many well-known personalities in Viet Nam including General Vo Nguyen Giap, historical researcher Tran Bach Dang, and People’s Artist Tra Giang," the director said.

Viet Nam’s Star – Ho Chi Minh would be broadcast on Korea’s MBC television network in January 2006, Hong said.
