The project covers an area of over 150 hectares. It will be built at a cost of VND 1,896 billion in a region with a material forest area of more than 20,000 ha. Tan Mai group also plans to plant an additional 9,000 ha of forest to ensure material supply for the new mill and invest US$5 million to build a waste water treatment plant.
The Tan Mai-Kon Tum pulp and paper mill has a capacity of 200,000 tonnes of printing and writing paper and 130,000 tonnes of pulp a year. It is expected to put into operation in 2011.
Addressing the ground-breaking ceremony, Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai underlined the significance of the plant in developing the watershed forests to benefit local residents, especially ethnic minority people, whose livelihood depends much on forests.
He also asked the Tan Mai group, the project’s main investor, to pay attention to generating jobs for local people while following environmental protecting laws during the construction.
