Representatives of EVN told at the meeting reservoirs across the country are short of water due to the dry weather. They also said that with the increasing consumption of and demand for electrical power, the country is likely encounter a power shortage in 2007, especially during the dry season because of the heavy dependence on hydropower. Therefore, the working group of EVN called on the province to urgently implement energy saving measures in order to avoid power shortage. At the meeting, representatives of the provincial People’s Committee pledged to promote electricity-saving measures in order to implement effectively the national strategic programme on energy saving and effective use. The province will concentrate on boosting propaganda to raise the people’s awareness of the need to save energy and the effective use of electricity and encouraging agencies and enterprises to use power in a more effective and economical way as well as asking them to use electricity properly and strictly punishing violations under relevant contracts. The province strives to save at least 22.75 million kWh of electricity this year.
The provincial People’s Committee will ask all agencies, enterprises and residents to implement electricity saving measures, especially in hours of peak power consumption. Accordingly, the agencies and offices have to save at least 10% annual electricity charge, turn off unnecessary electrical appliances when leave the office and after working hour, completely disconnect power from the power supplies and systems after working hours, fully take advantage of natural light and ventilation, reduce lights once staffs lessen in office, run air conditioner only when really necessary, reduce at least 50% number of lights in the lobby, ground and fence.
Moreover, it is necessary to dim half of the province’s street lights and lighting in public areas excepting traffic lamps and signs in order to conserve energy without compromising civil safety. Besides, each household should cut down usage of high capacity electrical appliances (air conditioners, electric heaters, electric irons, etc) in peak time. The enterprises also must implement electricity saving measures such as minimizing the use of high capacity electrical equipment as grinder, pumpstation, air compressor, etc in peak hours, ensuring to consume the capacity and load curve as registered in power purchasing agreement.
