(ĐN)- Recently, a delegation from the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation has paid a working visit to Dong Nai to inspect the activities of trade union organisations in domestic and foreign invested enterprises and conduct a survey on workers’ living standards in the province.
At a working session with the delegation, Huynh Tan Kiet, chairman of Dong Nai’s Labour Union said that by the end of 2006, there were about 400,000 laborers working at enterprises in Dong Nai, of whom, the majority has graduated from high schools with average age of 26.3 years. The number of workers increases from 49,000 to 60,000 on average every year, mainly working in textile and garment and footwear industries, wood processing and electronics assembling and they work based on the average hours per day of 8.39. Kiet told that trade unions at various levels throughout the province have made great efforts to take care of worker’s interests and defend labourers’ legitimate rights. He also reported that most garment and footwear firms in Dong Nai have faced the serious shortage of workers in recent years so they have to recruit labour force at the primary school level. Currently, the proportion of trained workers in the province stays at 32 %. He added the majority of workers in the province have low incomes and stay in cramped private rooms and in the worst cases and live in poor conditions.
During the stay in Dong Nai, the delegation was scheduled to visit some boarding-houses for workers in Bien Hoa city and Long Thanh district, meet some businesses and hold working sessions with relevant agencies and departments.
