(ĐN)- A seminar entitled “Vietnamese and FDI businesses on the threshold of the WTO” was conducted at Lac Hong Private University, Dong Nai province on Wednesday morning, March 22, 2006. Several honoured guests were present during this seminar: Mr. Robert Bannerman, Principal Commercial Officer of US Commercial Service in Ho Chi Minh City, Prof. Dr. Banh Tien Long, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Mr. Huynh Van Toi, Vice Chairman of Dong Nai People’s Committee.
The seminar provided local businesses with a forum to discuss the role of policy, institutions and WTO disciplines, trade opportunities and challenges for Vietnamese businesses after Vietnam becomes WTO member. Some participants noted that many domestic businesses and organizations are currently encountering difficulties and obstacles when they stand on the threshold of Vietnam’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Therefore, if Vietnam enters into WTO, local businesses will meet more challenges than opportunities….
“Vietnamese businesses should feel more confident in embracing globalization, joining the WTO will have a positive impact on the entire Vietnamese economy. There are going to be many greater opportunities from challenges that WTO membership offers for individual countries.” Said U.S. legal experts at the seminar.
U.S legal experts also emphasized the need for Vietnam to speed up the process of legislative reform. They noted that among the many reforms Vietnam will undertake, legal reform is of crucial importance. They said that Vietnam should apply new mechanisms and policies to create a fair investment and business environment compatible with international practices.
