Cooking up your favorite Vietnamese meal now costs more as gas canister prices are up mirroring a steep climb in world rates, with local demand running dry after the holidays.

Major gas companies including PetroVietnam Gas, VT Gas, Saigon Petro, Petrolimex, Gia Dinh Gas and Saigon Gas have increased their prices by some VND10,000 (US60¢) per 12kg cylinder on average over the last two days.

Elf Gas Saigon Co. said Thursday the cost of its 12.5kg cylinders will also rise by some VND12,000 (75¢) from next Monday.

Gas prices have risen by $44.5 per ton to $624.5 on the global market this month.

The hike coupled with plentiful gas reserves before the lunar New Year (Tet) week of holidays, which began last Sunday and idle industrial activity have left local demand sluggish. Gas agencies in Ho Chi Minh City have already predicted a 15-20 percent drop in business compared to January.

Local consumers had already seen a surge in gas prices earlier last month mirroring a surge in the price of imported gas.
