The ninth Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) opened its 12th plenum in Ha Noi on July 4 to discuss and approve draft documents for submission to the 10th CPV Congress scheduled for next year.

Opening the plenum, General Secretary Nong Duc Manh noted that an extremely important task of the plenum is to discuss and approve draft documents to be presented by the CPV Central Committee, ninth tenure, to the 10th National Congress. They include a political report, a report on socio-economic development orientations and tasks for the 2006-2010 period, a report on Party building, and a report on supplements and amendments to the Party Statute.

The plenum, which is expected to last until July 13, will also discuss and adopt a personnel orientation scheme for the 10th tenure of the CPV Central Committee and other issues.

The Party leader stressed that the draft documents to be discussed during the plenum have been thoroughly compiled to present a clear and comprehensive assessment of the most fundamental and important issues that had been unanimously agreed to. These documents, Manh said, also contain issues on which there have been differences of opinion that the plenum must discuss and unite.

Manh said he hoped that with a high sense of responsibility and with democracy and wisdom, the plenum will discuss and thoroughly resolve all outstanding issues in order to unanimously approve the draft documents - the most important preparation for the 10th National Congress.

At the opening session, Politburo members of the CPV Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong, Nguyen Tan Dung, and Tran Dinh Hoan presented a draft political report, a draft report on socio-economic development orientations and tasks for the 2006-2010 period, a draft report on Party building, and a draft report on supplements and amendments to the Party Statute
