(ĐN)- The Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that farmers in Dong Nai province cultivated more than 8,200 hectares of corn for 2008-2009 winter-spring crop and they harvested a bumper winter-spring crop with the yield of 7.2 tonnes per hectare on average. The province as a whole harvested around 60,000 tonnes of rice in the winter-spring crop, an increase of over 3,000 tonnes compared to last winter-spring crop. Many have shifted to corn, particularly in districts of Xuan Loc, cam My, Tan Phu, Dinh Quan… Many rice farmers have shifted to corn cultivation because of its high enonomic value and tolerance to water deficit conditions.

The Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development forcasts that over 26,000 hectares of corn will be planted in Dong Nai for this year’s summer-autumn crop. The corn farmers can get a profit of about VND 15 million per hectare if the sale price stands at VND 4,000 a kilo.
