An elderly people honored for his efforts to overcome poverty

(ĐN)- Mr. Vo Van Vinh, a 62 year-old man in Long Khanh town’s Hang Gon commune, is one of 128 elderly people nationwide honoured by Vietnamese Elderly Association for their efforts to overcome poverty.

Being the father of a large family, Mr. Vinh had to do various jobs in hopes of earning enough money to take care of his family. With continuous efforts to overcome difficulties, he spent all his capital to purchase 8 breed cows, he actively participated in training courses on breeding techniques held by Farmers’ Association and learned experiences from good farmers inside and outside the commune. Thanks to that, he increased his herd of cows to 90 after five years and 230 now. To feed all the cows, a large amount of grass is needed for the cows to grow healthy and breed; therefore, he purchased elephant grass seedlings, a popular feed for cattle, and planted them in the family’s 5,000 sq.m land. He uses his elephant grass as a supplementary diet for his cows.

In addition to breeding cows, Vinh also breeds pigs, earthworms (perionyx excavatus) and plants cocoa, durian, rambutan and other trees. Presently, his family’s life become better with an annual average income of VND450 million.

Currently, Vinh’s farm provides jobs for 15 local poor people with the monthly average salary of VND2 million. Besides, he also supports seeds, breeding animals, knowledge about planting and breeding to help local people to overcome poverty.

With Vinh’s success in business and his contributions in poverty eradication in the local , he was elected as Deputy Head of Agricultural Materials Cooperative and Vice Chairman of the commune’s Elderly People Association. Recently, he has been selected to participate in the honoring ceremony held by Vietnamese Elderly Association in Ha Noi.
