Long Thanh Golf Club is ready for the major charity golf tournament to tee off next month.

Vietnam Television (VTV) has scheduled a live broadcast of a major charity golf tournament which will tee-off in Long Thanh Golf Club in Dong Nai Province on October 7. All the proceeds will benefit poor people.

Le Van Kiem, head of the organizing committee and general director of Long Thanh Golf Club, said the biggest-ever charity golf tournament would be televised on VTV3. Other local television stations will also record the event to air on their own channels.

Kiem told the Daily that 144 local and expatriate golfers were expected to sign up for the event and make contributions to the poor.

He estimated that foreigners would account for 30% of the competitors at the first ever golf tournament, which also aims to mark the third Vietnamese Business Peoples Day which falls on October 13.

Kiem said many local and foreign business people have given their full support to the tournament. Pledged donations have already exceed over VND23bil (around US$1.5mil), and are still coming in.

The money will be used to build schools and endow grant scholarships for poor students, build clinics and gratitude houses for poor people, cover the surgery costs for sight-impaired patients and provide relief aid for storm-affected families in central Vietnam.

He added that the organizers of the golf tournament have already earmarked VND4bil to buy rice, food, books and notebooks for poor people and students in central Vietnam.

Donations will be accepted until the end of the competition day. The event has four hole-in-one prizes, including a Mercedes car and a US$200,000 apartment. Some winners may donate half of their prizes, he said.

Le Hoai Anh, general director of HALS Cosmetic and Perfumery, said the organizers expect to receive more donations so that they can help more disadvantaged people, especially those in rural areas.

The golf tournament is organized by P&T Group, Long Thanh Golf Club, and HALS, who have pledged to donate billions of dong to the poor.
