Dong Nai accelerates development of citywide power projects

On June 19, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long and a working delegation had a session with Dong Nai authorities to review the implementation of power generation and grid projects under the adjusted Power Development Plan VIII. Welcoming and working with the delegation were Nguyen Kim Long, Member of the City Party Committee’s Standing Board and Permanent Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, along with representatives of relevant departments, agencies and units.

Dong Nai currently has 25 power plants, including 12 hydropower plants, seven thermal power plants, two solar power plants, and four other power plants, with a total capacity of more than 4,900 MW. These facilities supply part of Dong Nai's electricity demand and contribute to the national power system. Overall, the city's power generation infrastructure has consistently ensured electricity supply for socio-economic development. However, the transmission grid faces a risk of overload due to the rapid growth in electricity demand.

To meet new socio-economic development requirements, the Department of Industry and Trade proposed prioritizing and supporting investment in power transmission network and power plant projects for 2026–2030. It recommended advancing the implementation schedule of three 220kV substations and their associated transmission systems from the 2031–2035 period to the 2026–2030 period to meet the city's growing electricity demand, particularly in industrial parks currently under development. Specifically, the proposed projects include the 220kV Long Thanh 2 substation and the Long Thanh 2 Industrial Park–Xuan Loc–Long Thanh 220kV transmission line branch; the 220kV Hon Quan substation and the 220kV Hon Quan line–Binh Long–Chon Thanh branch; and the 220kV Long Thanh 500kV substation.

The city also proposed adjusting and supplementing solar power projects based on investors' requests, while strengthening transmission-grid interconnection in northern Dong Nai City (formerly Binh Phuoc province). In addition, the city requested that the Ministry of Industry and Trade direct relevant units to consider maximizing the output of power plants in the city, particularly gas-fired power plants, including Nhon Trach 1, 2, 3, and 4, to help meet double-digit economic growth targets from 2026 onward.

Speaking at the session, Nguyen Kim Long, Member of the City Party Committee’s Standing Board and Permanent Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, said that Dong Nai would accelerate economic development in the coming period, with many major projects underway across the city. As a result, demand for electricity to support production, commerce, and residents' daily lives would increase significantly. He expressed hope that the Ministry of Industry and Trade and its affiliated units would coordinate closely to help resolve bottlenecks affecting ongoing projects in the city. At the same time, the city proposed studying and adjusting the investment roadmap for power supply and transmission projects to better align with local conditions, following Dong Nai's transition to city status.

At the working session, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long instructed relevant units to record Dong Nai's proposals and develop appropriate solutions to promote investment in power generation and grid projects in the city. Noting that Dong Nai currently has many projects that are underway or in the pipeline, he requested that the progress of ongoing projects be accelerated while conditions are prepared for new projects in accordance with the approved plan. The Ministry will closely coordinate with Dong Nai and relevant units to address emerging difficulties and obstacles to expand the city's power supply infrastructure.
