Located in the commune of the same name in Thong Nhat District, Giang Dien Waterfall is a great spot for one or two days on the weekend. There are two ways to get there from HCM City.

One is to head along National Highway 1 to the Vung Tau crossroads, turn left and go along National Highway 51 to the Thai Lan crossroads, take another left, and travel for 15 kilometers to the falls.

The other is to drive along National Highway 1 to Tra Co Market in Thong Nhat District, Dong Nai, turn right at the crossroads and head along a red dirt road to I Giang Dien Bridge, then turn left and go straight for one kilometre.

Located among low hills far from any built-up area, pristine Giang Dien may not be as imposing as the waterfalls in the Central Highlands but it does have its charms.

Atop the falls are boulders that break up the stream into several flows, which topple over the edge and become millions of tiny drops and spray thrown in all directions.

There are more rocks at the base, again dividing the waters and creating streamlets that reunite before they reach the village below. And on both banks are wild flowers, brushwood and shady trees that can inspire poetry.

The water is deliciously cool and perfect for recovering from a long hot drive. You can bathe at the top of the falls or at the base, and even jump from the top into the deep pool below if you crave excitement.

Otherwise, just soak in the water and relax, but a word of warning: when youre hopping from rock to rock, step carefully as the going is quite slippery in places.
