Through practical acts of kindness and compassion, they help spread a spirit of mutual support and solidarity throughout the community, strengthening bonds and giving people facing hardship renewed hope and motivation to improve their lives.
Quietly making charitable contributions
Believing that trade union work requires not only a sense of responsibility but also genuine compassion, Nguyen Thi Hoa, Chairwoman of the grassroots trade union at Quadrille Vietnam Co., Ltd. in Long Binh Ward, is devoted to caring for workers. Understanding the difficulties faced by union members suffering from serious illnesses, coping with family crises or caring for relatives, she regularly visits them, offers encouragement and mobilizes resources to provide timely assistance.
According to Hoa, when responsibility is translated into action, and compassionate people come together for the community, the trade union truly becomes a shared home. It not only protects workers’ rights but also offers care, understanding and support. The attention and companionship of the trade union organization and fellow workers also provide emotional support, helping employees feel more confident, work with peace of mind and remain committed to their employers.
Through sincere, everyday acts of kindness, charitable efforts by trade union officials and workers help foster a spirit of mutual support throughout the community. These efforts demonstrate that compassion does not have to begin with grand gestures; it grows through the care and generosity people show one another in their daily lives.
In addition to caring for workers, Hoa organizes numerous charitable activities throughout the city to support vulnerable groups. Together with other volunteers, she visits and presents gifts to facilities caring for older people without family support, shelters for orphans and abandoned children, and other charitable institutions. Essential supplies and meals prepared with care are delivered directly to recipients, helping ease their hardships and loneliness.
To sustain these activities, Hoa actively raises funds, connects with benefactors and encourages a strong sense of responsibility among trade union officials, members and workers. Collective commitment is essential to ensuring that charitable programs reach those most in need.
Spreading kindness through everyday acts
Although he is not financially well-off, Nguyen Duc Hung, a worker at Chang Shin Vietnam Co., Ltd. in Tan Trieu Ward, has consistently devoted part of his modest wages to charitable activities. Motivated by empathy and a desire to help people facing greater difficulties than himself, he has also connected compassionate individuals to support disadvantaged people. His efforts help spread kindness and bring meaningful assistance to those less fortunate.
Accompanying Hung one evening in early September as he delivered gifts to informal workers facing hardship, we gained a deeper appreciation of the significance of the compassionate work he has steadfastly carried out for many years. In addition to checking in on workers in need and those earning a living at night, personally handing out cakes, milk, drinking water and other practical gifts, he also offers them encouraging handshakes and a warm, approachable manner that leaves recipients feeling heartened.
Le Van Sy, a street lottery ticket seller in Tam Hiep Ward and one of the recipients of gifts from Hung’s volunteer group, shared: “Informal work is demanding, especially when you have to earn a living at night. The cakes, milk and food I receive not only give me something to eat and drink but also bring me joy and warmth because I know the community cares. This meaningful encouragement gives me more motivation to overcome life’s difficulties.”
Reflecting on his charitable work, Hung said he is an ordinary worker himself. However, seeing colleagues suffer from life-threatening illnesses, families face hardship, and people in need of assistance has always weighed on his mind and motivated him to do his part to help. Driven by this desire, he has connected fellow workers and benefactors to provide timely assistance to those facing difficulties. He has also built and expanded his charitable activities through the community page “Cong Nhan Co Gi Vui” (“What’s Fun About Being a Worker”), bringing compassionate people together and spreading kindness.
To help more people in need, Hung is also a member of the Chang Shin Volunteer Team, helping repair homes so that his colleagues can have stable living arrangements. He also actively participates in initiatives launched by the trade union, contributing to practical efforts to care for and support workers. The smiles, joy and positive changes in the lives of those he helps are what motivate him to continue his volunteer journey and spread love and compassion throughout the community.
“The value of charitable activities lies not in the amount of money or the number of gifts given, but in the care and encouragement offered to people going through difficult times. Another precious aspect of this journey is the support of the many workers, benefactors and other people who share the desire to do good,” Hung said.
