Dong Nai Police arrested a Singaporean for using a fake credit card in an attempt to purchase an iPhone.
According to police, Lai San, 26, used a Vietnam Export Import Bank (Exmibank) Visa credit card to pay for an iPhone 4S worth VND20.5 million (US$986) at a shop in Bien Hoa city.
However, when the card failed to pass the shop’s card reader several times, the shop’s cashier called the bank to check information, prompting the foreigner to run away.
But he was soon tracked down by security guards, who handed the suspect over to local police.
Police said they found the man in possession of 13 other Visa cards.
At the same day, another mobile phone shop in Bien Hoa reported that three foreigners successfully cheated it out of two iPhones worth VND38 million ($1,800) in total, using the same scheme. The credit card used to purchase the electronic devices was later found out to be fake.
Further investigations continue.
