According to the results of general censuses in countries around the globe, the world population increases by an average of 78 million every year and is expected to reach 7 billion next year. This will place great pressure on demand for food, housing, water, and sanitary conditions for everyone.
In Vietnam , the population growth rate declined from 1.7 percent in the period of 1989-1999 to 1.2 percent in 1999-2009. This confirmed the fact that the country’s fertility rate has been steadily declining over the past 20 years. However, the imbalance of sex ratio at birth, population ageing and access to sexual and reproductive health services for young people are among emerging population issues that need to be addressed now and in the future.
In Dong Nai, maternal and child healthcare and reproductive health have been greatly improved. But, the province also saw an alarming gender imbalance as among newborns in first six months of this year with a birth rate of 113 boys for every 100 girls.
In the coming time, Dong Nai will step up family planning campaigns and improve reproductive health care services. Besides, more effective measures would be taken to integrate population programs into other socio-economic development plans and raise public awareness of population-related issues such as family planning and reproductive health.
On the occasion, the provincial People’s Committee and Department of Health commended individuals and units with outstanding performance in population work.
