Dinh Quan district’s efforts to improve lives of ethnic groups

(ĐN)- Dinh Quan is a mountainous agricultural district with population of around 250,000 people, of which minority ethnic groups make up over 18 percent. In the past time, Dinh Quan district’s Party Committee and People’s Committee have made ongoing efforts to implement ethnic policies, helping local ethnic people escape poverty and enhance the quality of life.  Particularly, national programmes for socio-economic development (Programme 134, 135) have been carried out effectively and have given a facelift to in some poor communes.

In implementation of the Government’s Programme 135, Dinh Quan has built thousands of infrastructure projects worth more than VND22 billion, including roads, bridges, irrigational facilities, schools, medical centres and electricity supply networks. Until now, living conditions in the district’s poor mountainous communes have been improved, with a significant reduction in the number of poor households and marked progress in education and healthcare.

Dinh Quan has so far helped build and hand over 720 new houses worth a total of over VND22.35 billion for poor households of ethnic minorities under the government’s progamme 134, fulfilling 100% of the year’s target. Besides, the district mobilized several billions of dong from local organizations and individuals to construct 225 charitable houses for poor families in the locality. Through the programme, about 500 poor ethnic households were also provided with seeds and animals for breeding and received training in more effective ways to farm, which has increased their awareness of modern farming techniques.

Over the past year, the programmes have yielded achievements in a number of areas and will continue to meet the demands of local residents.

However, there remain shortcomings in implementing the programmes, such as the relatively small-scale of a project to develop production, etc.
