86 percent of rural population to access safe water in 2009

(ĐN)- Implementing the national program on clean water and rural environment hygiene, Dong Nai has so far built nearly 30 concentrated water supply systems in poor communes. Particularly, the province spent approximately VND5 billion for construction of clean water supply station in Song Trau commune, Trang Bom district. The station with a capacity of 550 cu.m per day is expected to provide safe water for around 7,000 local people.

Phan Van Kinh, Director of the provincial Centre for Safe Water and Rural Environmental Hygiene, said that a national programme has set a goal of providing 85% of the rural population in Vietnam with access to safe drinking water by 2010, with a further goal of reaching 100% by 2020. To obtain the targets, Dong Nai needs to continue its efforts to build water supply projects, increase hygiene infrastructure in rural areas, replace old household water supply systems.

Presently, 25 communal water supply systems with a capacity of 300-600 cu.m per day each are effectively operating and supplying water to 81.8 per cent of the rural population. The figure is expected to reach 86 percent in 2009.

According to plan, two new fresh water supply stations with a combined capacity of 1,660 cu.m/day will be put into operation in Tan Phu district’s Phu Binh, Phu Lap communes from now till the end of the year, raising the number of rural people with access to safe water.
