Tan Phu speeds up poverty reduction

Tan Phu district has the highest poverty rate in Dong Nai and most of ethnic minority households residing in the district are poor households. During the past years, the district has concentrated its efforts on the implementation of the Program of hunger elimination and poverty alleviation for ethnic people.

Through the implementation of the poverty alleviation programme’s third phase covering the 2006-10 period, 238 ethnic minority households in the district have been loaned over 1.6 billion VND by local branches of Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and Vietnam Bank for Social Policies. Of the sum, more than 1.2 billion VND has assisted poor households.

In addition, 21 poor ethnic households have accessed loans from the National Employment Fund with a total capital of 150 million VND.

During the past two years, the district has made efforts to create jobs for 120 laborers from poor ethnic households.

The Government’s programme 134 has brought benefits to 605 minority ethnic households. Accordingly, 68 households were provided with land for production and another 20 households received land for housing, 92 poor households were provided with housing. The programme has also provided safe water supplies for 147 poor households.

The district has provided free health insurance cards for all poor ethnic households. Students from ethnic minority groups in the district were given exempt from paying tuition fees. The implementation of the poverty alleviation programme in Tan Phu has brought in positive results as a large number of ethnic minority people were provided with vocational training and jobs.

Providing vocational training and creating jobs for ethnic minority people are key tasks for Tan Phu district’s People’s Committee to achieve maximum impact for sustainable poverty alleviation programme. The district sets an annual goal of providing vocational training and jobs for between 200 and 400 people and helping lift between 100 and 120 households out of poverty in order to reduce the percentage of poor households in the locality at the lowest level. Besides, the district plans to repair and build 146 houses for poor households, provide land for housing for 9 households and another 300 households will receive land for production. Local production establishments will be offered loans worth 500 million VND to provide jobs for 200-300 laborers from poor ethnic households.
