The pain of a family affected by Dioxin

The story of the family of Mr. Truong Quang Ngai (living in Hamlet 3, Hieu Lien Commune, Vinh Cuu district, Dong Nai province) whose members are affected by dioxin that touches everybody’s heart.

At the age of 18, Truong Quang Ngai joined the army as a soldier in Division 22B under Military Zone No.4, stationed in Da Nang airport and fought in Laos for a few years.

Ngai was demobilised in 1981. Then, in 1981, he along with his wife and three children moved to Dong Nai. His family has quickly settled into their new lives in Dong Nai where he and his wife worked at Hieu Liem afforestation yards. But many misfortunes happened to him, his wife fell down while harvesting pepper and she was seriously injured in early 2005. Thus, he had to sell all his property to have money to cover treatment costs for his wife. But for the last three years she has been paralysed. Truong Thi Thanh Nga, his daughter became sick and her legs were paralyzed in late 2005.

Ngai’s family is living in special difficult circumstance. His wife was paralyzed due to a labor accident, she could not take care of herself anymore and the cost for one day’s treatment is VND100,000. Ngai knew that he had been affected with dioxin when had been in the army. He has had dioxin-affected children. His oldest son has to work far from home to earn money for treatment for his wife and his face was also covered with small excrescences.

Sympathizing with the difficulties of the family, the neighbours often visit and help them to overcome difficulties. Recently, Vietnamese Association in Belgium donated 1,000 Euros (VND25 million) to build a charity house for the family. Besides, the benefactors in Bien Hoa city presented gifts, including television, fridge, clothes, books and cash, to the family.

His daughter has been moved to tears by the help of the neighbors and society. On behalf of the family, Mr. Ngai expressed sincere thanks to the benefactors for their support and hoped that Nga would recover her health and find her dreams.
