According to survey data, in 2004, Dong Nai had 314 poor children suffering from heart disease who were waiting for free operations. These children lived in underprivileged conditions and often suffered lack of food and their parents were unable to cover costs for surgery.
For this reason, the Dong Nai Department For Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs has launched the campaign for Children’s Hearts to encourage the whole society to join hands in helping poor children with heart defects. Over the years, many varied fundraising events have been held in the province to help poor children suffering from heart disease such as charity performances. Annually, the employees working in enterprises, institutions or organisations in the province are mobilised to contribute one day of their salaries to help save lives of poor children with inborn heart defects. Up to now, the Campaign for Children’s Hearts has funded 269 surgeries for poor children with total cost of over VND 10 billion. In 2008, the campaign will offer free heart surgeries for 50 poor children with total amount of about VND 3 billion.
* From hearts to hearts
Over the past four years, the campaign has received strong supports from individuals and enterprises, including Industrial Urban Development J.S Company No 2, Dong Nai Agricultural Service Cooperative Alliance, Phong Thai Group, Long Hung Construction and Agricultural Service Cooperative, Aqua J.S Company, family of Mr. Do Huu Tai, etc. Besides, the charity performances have been also organized to raise the fund.
The Children Sponsor Fund has raised approximately VND2 billion so far. This amount of money will be used to provide free heart surgeries for 30 children. However, there still are 20 children with heart disease who are living in difficult circumstances and need the help.
On June 28, a charity performance will be organized to raised fund for heart children patients. The performance with the participation of singers from HCM city, Dong Nai Children House and Dong Nai Centre for Disabled Children.
Deputy Director of Department Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Huynh Thi Nghia hoped that the fund will continue to receive donations to help the children to have a normal live.
