Mr. Duc said that he created the generator because of increasing electricity prices. He said that his generator, which has been operational since late 2005, was made from spare auto parts.
"When I started raising pigs, I thought to build an industrial model to protect the environment. When the number of pigs increased, I built a 15 cubic meter biogas vault. As I got more pigs, I was determined to make a generator using the biogas for my family’s demands as well as to prevent pollution," he added.
He installed his machine two years later after researching information on biogas in the mass media and gaining experience as time went on. First, he used the machine to grind rice, and then he transformed it into a generator.
Some local people asked him to build generators for their own use. He installed machines for numerous families in Long Khanh after meticulously studying the location.
Nguyen Quang Thao, the chairman of Giang Dien commune’s farmer association, uses Duc’s machine.
"My family not only saves over half of our monthly electricity bill, but also has helped to correct the polluted situation in the surrounding environment."
According to Le Hy Phuong, chairman of the Giang Dien Commune People’s Committee, households that raise over 10 pigs account for 90 percent of the commune. The majority still dump waste water into the region’s waterways which causes serious environmental problems, making Duc’s environmentally friendly generator even more valuable.
