Sign language classes offered for the deaf in Dong Nai

(ĐN)- In the morning of September 24, sign language classes for deaf and hard-of-hearing students operated by the Provincial Department of Education and Training were opened for the 2005-2006 academic year.

(ĐN)- In the morning of September 24, sign language classes for deaf and hard-of-hearing students operated by the Provincial Department of Education and Training were opened for the 2005-2006 academic year. The new school year opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Huynh Van Toi, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee and representatives from Ministry of Education and Training, the Nippon Foundation of Japan.

The sign language program for the deaf was funded by the Nippon Foundation. To date, the program already carried out in Dong Nai province for 4 years. It provides supplementary compulsory education to deaf learners, mainly for Junior and Senior High School Courses and Sign Language courses. Sign Language is a visual language through which the severely and profoundly deaf can communicate without speech. The class, which is required for deaf and hard-of-hearing students seeking certification in Education, is designed to help learners improve their communication skills. During the past four years, about 58 students nationwide have attended these classes. 29 of such students whose junior high school class has graduated.

Dr. J. Woodward, Project Director unveiled that he had completed a draft of Vietnamese Sign Language book, volume 1 and English-Vietnamese Sign Language Dictionary during the past 4 years.

On this occasion, the Dong Nai province’s Study Encouragement Association and Lac Hong Private University donated 10 computers to sign language classes.
