Dong Nai province will shut down all nine stone quarries in Bien Hoa city by year-end and build a township in their place.

The quarries, located next to each other, stretch a total of more than 139 hectares with many pits 70-80 meters deep.

Authorities initially planed to transform the site into gardens and water fountains to serve tourists, but following trips abroad to study similar models, they decided to develop an eco-complex with residential quarters, resorts, parks, and amusement centers.

However, the complex needs to be equipped with a modern drainage system to ensure there is no contamination of groundwater, Pham Huu Nghia, Director of the provincial Mineral Division, said.

The work would require large investment, he added.

Ly Thanh Phuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction, said the complex would dovetail with the city’s overall urban plan.

Besides, such use of the deep quarries would also eliminate the potential hazards they posed to local residents, he said.
