A wild elephant killed a 14-year-old boy near an afforestation farm in the southern province of Dong Nai on Sunday.
Eyewitness said Nguyen Tran Vu was sitting on the back seat of a motorcycle driven by 20-year-old Nguyen Van Dong, along with 39-year-old Hoang Thom, to the La Nga forest in Dinh Quan District when they saw an elephant in front of them.
Thom stopped his bike in a bid to run away from the animal. Vu jumped out of the bike but the elephant chased after him, throwing him to the ground with its trunk.
The animal also stamped its feet on the two motorcycles. Upon seeing Vu lying there with his head, stomach and legs hurt, Thom and Dong pulled trees as weapons, screaming to drive the elephant away.
The animal backed off and then ran back into the forest. The two men carried Vu to a residential area for help but he died on the way.
Nearby residents said the elephant once attacked a local, and usually arrived at the areas where people live to destroy the crops.
Meanwhile, as of Sunday evening, authorities could not enter the accident site due to slippery roads and heavy rains.
