Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh asked the ideological and cultural sector to work for rallying the nation in the aim of turning it into an industralised economy by 2020.

The Party chief made the request while addressing a conference in southern Dong Nai province on Feb. 26 to review the ideological-cultural sectors work in 2006 and set tasks for this year.

"More than ever, a strong unity of the Party, people and the army is needed in order to fully mobilise national strength and internal resources combining them with the effects of international economic integration in order to achieve fast economic growth so as to lift the country out of its underdeveloped status," the top Party leader said.

Party General Secretary Manh also said the ideological-cultural sector should play a key role in the drive to encourage people to learn and follow the moral example of President Ho Chi Minh.

He pledged that the Party Central Committee, Political Bureau and Secretariat will work on plans to strengthen ideological agencies from grassroots to central levels to maximise the efficiency of their operation, thus fortifying the ideological-cultural front.

Phung Huu Phu, Permanent Deputy Head of the Party Central Committees Commission for Ideology and Culture, said the sectors main duty in 2007 will be raising the publics awareness on the election of the 12th Legislature, the campaign on "studying and following the morale of President Ho Chi Minh", in addition to other major events of this year.

Reviewing ideology-culture work last year, Phu said the peoples confidence and support for the Partys renewal guidelines and the States laws, policies and management skills has been solidified and the spirit of solidarity, mutual caring, patriotism, sense of national pride, revolutionary tradition and national cultural identity have been preserved and promoted.

The ideological and cultural sector significantly contributed to promoting economic growth and abolishing any negative resistance against the doi moi (renovation) operation, Phu commented.

However, the official admitted that ideological and cultural officials were not flexible in performing their duties and theoretical research had not caught up with reality.

The conference will close on Feb. 27.
