Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung affirmed that Viet Nam has worked with other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in reinforcing the groups fundamental principles and values to strengthen their solidarity and connection.

PM Dung was speaking in an interview granted to the Viet Nam News Agency after he attended the 12th ASEAN Summit and the second East Asia Summit, in Cebu, the Philippines, from Jan. 12-15.

Based on these fundamental principles and values, Viet Nam, as an active and responsible ASEAN member, and other ASEAN member countries will strive to further enhance the groups dynamism, flexibility as well as its ability to adapt to profound changes in the world, development requirements and specific circumstances of the region and of each member, PM Dung stated. He also said the grouping will work to narrow the development gap within the bloc and between the bloc and other regions.

The PM asserted that the preservation of principles and values was a right choice for the group in order to successfully build a united, dynamic and open ASEAN community with a respected position in the international arena.

According to the Vietnamese Government leader, to contribute to this process, Viet Nam is preparing for the organisation of the second Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Development and Cooperation Forum (IDCF) this year, which aims to devise a strategy for the implementation of IAI on narrowing the development gap in the group.

Also in the year, the country will host the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Meeting and the Summit of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam, the PM told the agency.

"The 12th ASEAN Summit themed One Caring and Sharing Community closed successfully, creating a new momentum for the roadmap towards a united, dynamic, effective and open ASEAN community," the PM said.

Late on Jan. 15, PM Dung and his entourage arrived in Ha Noi, wrapping up his trip to Cebu, the Philippines, for the 12th ASEAN Summit and other related conferences from Jan. 12-15.
