The 4th Conference on Secure Trade in the APEC Region (STAR 4) opened in
STAR is a large annual event aimed at securing the flow of goods and people in the region and avoiding the risk of terrorism. STAR 4 took place under the theme “enhancing the public-private partnership in the implementation of secure trade measures”.
Addressing the conference, Vietnamese Trade Minister Truong Dinh Tuyen affirmed that APEC is the busiest business environment and is witnessing many complicated changes in terms of security, as well as facing the risk of terror attacks.
With 21 member economies, APEC represents approximately 45.8 percent of world trade and gathers together representatives from more than 30 seaports and 23 airports. In particular, APEC businesses have formed production and labour distribution networks throughout the region, Mr Tuyen said.
Regarding the major contents of STAR 4, Ambassador Tran Trong Toan, executive director of the APEC Secretariat, said: “The conference will find out key measures to implement APEC leaders’ instructions from 2005 so as to create a safe business environment in the context of dealing with terrorism, epidemics and natural calamities. Many APEC members voiced their support for the initiative.”
The two-day conference aims to fight against various security threats to the region’s economic growth and work out measures to boost co-operation among three key factors – government, private sector and international organizations - in implementing initiatives, security measures in commercial activities, as well as tapping co-operation potential in increasing capacity, transferring technology and intensifying security measures relating to trade.
STAR 4 will also focus on four major issues: safe trade in the APEC region, maritime security, aviation security and increasing the capacity to implement safe trade.
The main results of the conference will then be reported to the APEC Anti-Terrorism Special Group Conference and SOM 1.
