Nearly 76 million people nationwide were covered by health insurance as of December 31, 2016, accounting for 81.7% of the population, exceeding by 2.7% the target assigned by the Prime Minister.

This information was released by Vietnam Social Insurance (VSI) during its conference in Hanoi on January 3.

Health insurance covers 81.7% of population.

Nearly 13 million people joined compulsory social insurance and 11.1 million participated in unemployment insurance, while the number of voluntary insurance participants was 203,000.

The figures were good results for the insurance sector, thanks to efforts in administrative procedure reform, application of technology and implementation of measures to create favourable conditions for people and enterprises to arrange insurance.

In the past year, the sector paid for 144 million patients covered by health insurance, a-year-on-year increase of 10.8%, with estimated medical expenses of nearly VND70 trillion, exceeding by VND5.130 trillion the health insurance fund for 2016.

In 2017, the VSI will continue to focus on implementing policies related to social and health insurances for labourers and people as well as completing business management processes in line with the law and practices.

The VSI will closely co-ordinate with ministries, branches, relevant agencies, political and social organisations and localities to enhance the direction, inspection and supervision of the implementation of social and health insurance.
