At the ceremony, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the UNAIDS, Michel Sidibe applauded Vietnam for being the first country to announce the implementation of the 90-90-90 target: 90% of people living with HIV knowing their diagnosis, 90% of people living with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment, and 90% of people on HIV treatment having an undetectable viral load.
Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said there are approximately 260,000 HIV positive people in Vietnam and nearly 90,000 HIV/AIDS carriers have received antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. However, Vietnam is witnessing new challenges in HIV/AIDS prevention, she said, adding that there are around 12,000-14,000 new HIV infections annually.
In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said 90-90-90 is an ambitious and demanding target for Vietnam as it is estimated that Vietnam has only detected around 56% of new HIV infections, far from the target.
The Deputy PM urged the MoH to work closely with relevant ministries, departments and localities to realise the UN target.
