(ĐN)- There are about 800 hectares devoted to sugarcane in Trang Bom district in the 2009-2010 crop, an increase of around 50 hectares compared to the same period of 2008. The localities with the largest areas under cane are communes of Hung Thinh, Song Thao and Trung Hoa.
Until now, almost 60 per cent of the district’s total area under sugarcane cultivation have been harvested with the yield of about 60 tonnes per hectare on average. The price of sugarcane at the garden fixed by Bien Hoa- Tri An Sugar Company is VND 720,000 per tonne, 1.5 times higher than the same period last year. With this price, local farmers can get a profit of nearly VND 50 million every hectare of sugarcane after the production cost is deducted.
In 2010, many farmers will shift to sugarcane cultivation because of its high economic value. It is expected that the area under sugarcane cultivation in the district will be expanded to an additional tens of hectares this year.
