Vedan to not be suspended from production

Officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Dong Nai Province and related agencies met on Wednesday to finalize decisions regarding penalties for Vedan. They decided not to stop Vedan’s operation, and that a suspension of operation will be applied if this violator does not execute the two verdicts of paying administrative fines and dismantling its illegal waste discharging system.

Vedan will have to take measures to solve any environmental consequences. Between today to November 11, if Vedan’s waste water fails to meet standards, Dong Nai’s provincial authorities will suspend some of the stages of production in this firm.

Between now and the year’s end, Vedan will have to pay half of the total VND 127 billion ($7.47 million) as environmental charges. By the fourth quarter of 2009, the firm will have to pay the whole charge. So far it has paid VND 15 billion (over $880,000) of the environmental charges and VND 267 million ($15,700) of the fine.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has set up an inter-sector working group to oversee Vedan’s execution of their penalties.
