
Dong Nai’s economy recorded high growth rate in the first eight months of 2006. Accordingly, the province’s total industrial production value exceeded 32,000 billion VND, up 18 percent over the same period last year, of which the central state-owned enterprises reached the production value of around VND4,606 billion, up 14.3% from the previous year.

The enterprises achieved high growth rate including Tan Mai Paper Company, Dong Nai Paper Company, Bien Hoa Chemical Factory, Long Thanh Super-Phosphate Factory, Dong Nai Granite Factory and Thanh Thanh Enamelled Tile Company.
The privately owned sector in Dong Nai increased investment capital by VND4,162 billion during the past eight months. During the past months, 652 new privately owned enterprises have been set up with combined registered capital of VND2,853 billion and 250 operational projects have registered to expand their operations with a total additional capital of nearly VND1,309 billion. Until now, Dong Nai has 4,600 enterprises with total registered capital of over VND13,200 billion.
In the eight month period from January to August 2006, the industrial production value of the non-state enterprises reached over VND 4,170 billion, a 22% increase from the same period of last year. Especially, the wood processing industry had the highest production value, 35% higher than that of previous year. However, the production value of some industries has dropped sharply in the past eight months such as hand-made pottery and refined brick because of high input material prices and unstable consumption market. The foreign-invested enterprises registered the highest production value of exceeding VND 21,640 billion, up 19.6% compared to last year. Some industries which saw high growth rates include textile of 21%, food and drink of 17.8%, office equipment production of 6.5%.
Dong Nai’s export turnover surpassed US$ 2.680 billion in the past eight months, a nearly 34 percent increase from previous year. Of this figure, more than US$2.5 billion came from foreign investment sector (up 34.4 per cent), nearly US$126 million from local enterprises (up 24.5 per cent) and nearly US$55 million from central enterprises located in Dong Nai (up 36.8 per cent). During the reviewed period, the province shipped 43,819 tonnes of coffee (up 33.6 percent) and 4,584 tonnes of cashew nuts (up 56 percent). It also exported 12.8 million USD worth of footwear, 16.5 million USD worth of wood furniture and 27 million USD of garments. However, the export turnover of some items such as hand-made pottery, black pepper, bee honey has dropped considerably in the past eight months. Accordingly, export turnover of handicrafts products reached only US$ 2.7 million, reduced 52%; black pepper dropped 56% and bee honey decreased roughly 3%.
Additionally, capital mobilization in Dong Nai in eight months saw positive growth while the banking sector also achieved high growth in lending. By the end of August, commercial banks of the province lured as much as VND 11,825 billion, up 19.2% over the end of last year. Of this figure, deposits from individuals reached 6,616 billion VND, up 25%. Total loans stood at 15,193 billion VND at the end of August, rising almost 15%. Of the loans, long and medium-term loans accounted for 35.5%.
Cargo transportation recorded strong growth in January-August in Dong Nai. The total volume of cargo transportation reached over 16 million tons, increased by 12.7% over the previous year. Particularly, some 1.735 million tons of cargo moved through
Dong Nai’s leaders are urging departments, sectors and localities throughout the province to boost industrial production, intensify bird flu control to stop the outbreak and ensure adequate State budget collection.
