Viettel has become the first telecom service provider in Viet Nam to bill calls in six-second increments for outgoing calls from fixed-line telephone subscribers to mobile users.
The company, which now has over 2 million mobile-phone subscribers, last year became the first telecom company in
The latest move is aimed at attracting more users to Viettel’s ailing fixed-line network, which has just 100,000 subscribers.
The announcement was made just days after the company said it would cut mobile tariffs by VND100 per minute.
"The minimum rate for a call from a Viettel landline to a mobile phone has been reduced from VND765 to VND129," said Viettel deputy general director Nguyen Manh Hung, adding that the company previously billed the minimum charge for a 30-second block.
Hung said the new billing would help its users to save substantially on outgoing calls to mobile phones, which account for 40-60 per cent of total outgoing calls.
Viettel’s fixed-line service, which is currently available in 28 provinces, will soon be expanded to 50 provinces nation-wide, according to the military-run company.
