Previously, in residential areas, household waste was placed in tightly tied plastic bags and left in front of homes for collection. This practice not only impacted urban aesthetics but also raised concerns about sanitation and the environment.

In Dong Xoai ward, Dong Nai province, since the launch of the “Household trash bins – joining hands to protect the environment” initiative, residents have been disposing of household waste in designated areas. The model has contributed to improving environmental aesthetics and enhancing waste collection efficiency, while also fostering a stronger sense of responsibility among residents for protecting the environment in both their homes and communities.

Residents respond enthusiastically

According to Bui Thi Hien from Tien Thanh 1 Neighborhood, Dong Xoai ward, her family used to handle household waste by burning it or placing it in bags hung at the gate for collection. However, in 2023, when the ward introduced covered, self-managed household bins, all of her family’s waste was disposed of properly in the bins, making the home cleaner.

Hien shared: “The ward Fatherland Front Committee and Women’s Union have propagated and implemented the household bin model. Our neighborhood is now cleaner, the surroundings are more beautiful, and the air is fresher. Since the introduction of this model, children in our homes are also being educated to protect the environment and to dispose of waste properly.”

Along the residential areas in Dong Xoai ward, green, user-friendly bins are clearly visible in front of homes. These household bins significantly contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of environmental protection within the community.

Leu Thi Thuy, Head of the Women’s Union in Tien Thanh 2 Neighborhood, said: “Since the ward Fatherland Front Committee and Women’s Union launched the household bin initiative, I find it practical and convenient. It protects both the environment and community health, contributes to cleaner surroundings, and supports the development of a more civilized urban area.”

The “Household trash bins – joining hands to protect the environment” model is established thanks to the active propaganda and mobilization efforts of the Dong Xoai ward Fatherland Front Committee and the ward Women’s Union. Recognizing the benefits of environmentally friendly bins, local households, especially members of the Women’s Union, have actively contributed funds to purchase bins, helping to create clean, green, and safe streets.

Hoang Lan Anh, Vice Chairwoman of the Dong Xoai ward Fatherland Front Committee and Chairwoman of the ward Women’s Union, stated: “The ward Fatherland Front Committee and the ward Women’s Union recognize that implementing household trash bins is crucial to addressing practical need which is protecting the environment and ensuring proper waste separation at the source. Accordingly, the locality has equipped each household with its own covered bin to maintain hygiene. The ward Women’s Union, which currently has 16 sub-branches, has fully implemented the model, receiving strong support and active participation from its members.”

Expanding the model

Since its launch in 2023, over 2,000 household bins have been distributed throughout Dong Xoai ward. Many streets, including Ngo Duc Ke, Ton Duc Thang, Phan Chu Trinh, Tran Huu Do, and Bui Vien Streets, are now equipped with uniformly arranged bins. The initiative has also been extended to other residential areas.

Nguyen Thi Hang from Tien Thanh 1 Neighborhood, Dong Xoai ward, said: “Providing each household with its own trash bin is very effective. It helps maintain environmental hygiene and preserves the appearance of the residential area. With individual bins, waste is collected more neatly, and the surroundings stay cleaner.”

Contributing to cleaner and more spacious streets, household trash bins in residential areas have proven effective in protecting the environment. They are low-cost, easy to purchase, and suitably designed for residential spaces. Importantly, they help raise public awareness about proper waste disposal. In the coming period, the Dong Xoai ward Fatherland Front Committee will continue to implement and expand the model, aiming to provide household trash bins to 100% of households across the ward.
