Dong Nai drives green growth for net zero target

Amid the context of urgent global challenges of climate change and emission reductions, green and sustainable development is no longer optional but an inevitable path. Dong Nai, as a major industrial hub, key agricultural region, and an area with eco-tourism advantages, has set a net-zero target by 2050, in line with the Government’s commitments at COP26 and COP28 (the 26th and 28th Conferences of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).

For many years, Dong Nai has laid the foundation for a green and circular economy. Throughout recent Provincial Party Congresses, as well as in the Dong Nai Provincial Planning for 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050, sustainable development has consistently been recognized as a core pillar. This approach embodies both a strategic vision and perseverance in goals, while also responding to the practical demands of industrial and agricultural development.

At the beginning of 2024, Dong Nai became the first locality in the country to release a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050. This initiative represents not only a strategic step toward achieving the net-zero target but also demonstrates the province’s political determination and proactive approach in prioritizing emission reduction and green development as essential goals.

In the core industrial sector, while many localities still sought to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) at all costs, Dong Nai set criteria to exclude projects that posed environmental pollution risks or were highly labor-intensive. Currently, the province identifies processing, manufacturing, and high-tech industries as key breakthrough drivers. Industrial parks are required to transition toward green and ecological models, providing a foundation for emission reductions in the sector that accounts for the largest share of the province’s economic structure.

With its advantage of large land area, the agricultural sector continues to shift toward high technology and organic practices, increasing the share of deep processing. Developing value chains linked to raw material regions, applying technology, and adapting to climate change will enable Dong Nai to uphold its status as a leading hub for livestock, rubber, and cashew, while also reinforcing its role in the nation’s green agriculture sector.

Another driving force is the service and tourism sector. The province aims to become a green logistics hub by leveraging its advantages in seaports, airports, inland ports, and border gates. With the largest forest area in southern Vietnam, interspersed with rivers, lakes, and mountains, Dong Nai possesses ideal conditions to develop a sustainable “smokeless industry,” providing livelihoods for people while preserving valuable natural resources for the future.

Achieving net-zero emissions is not only a goal but also an opportunity for Dong Nai to restructure its economy toward a green model and improve the quality of growth. With existing foundations, new potential added after the provincial merger, and strong political determination, Dong Nai is well-positioned to become a leading locality in the country on the path to net zero by 2050.
