| Many households escape from poverty thanks to preferential loans |
At a recent working session with Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Tri of the provincial People’s Committee stressed that poverty reduction is long-term work that is closely associated with the province’s socio-economic development, so it is necessary to be persistent in pursuing the targets in both policy making and implementation; programs and policies on poverty reduction should mobilize the power and the participation of the entire political system and society. It is also important to encourage the poor to make their own efforts to escape from poverty sustainably.
According to Deputy Director Pham Van Cong of Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the province’s poverty reduction programs and policies have rallied the strength and the participation of the entire political system and society, authorities and Party committees at different levels, economic groups, enterprises, social and political organizations, and the poor themselves.
In 2000, Dong Nai was seen as a successful example in eradicating hunger; however, it had more than 40,000 poor households. To help these people to escape from poverty, the province paid particular attention to vocational training, combining job creation with production assistance, providing preferential loans and housing assistance, building the plan for sustainable poverty alleviation program. As a result, the beneficiaries and funding for the poor have been expanded, meeting the aspirations of the poor.
Director Le Thi My Phuong of Dong Nai Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs said that the department has carried out a survey to evaluate the province’s poverty situation and its causes in order to propose feasible solutions as well as build a new poverty standard for the 2015-2020 period in accordance with current economic and social situation.
Under the new standard, which will be submitted to the provincial People’s Council for approval, poor households are categorised as those with an average income of under VND1 million per person per month in rural areas and VND1.2 million in urban areas. Average income levels for households near the poverty line will be between VND1.2-1.5 million in urban areas and VND1-1.3 million in rural areas.
When the new poverty standard becomes effective during the 2015-20 period, the number of the poor in Dong Nai will increase by 54,000-56,000 households.
