The number of occupational accidents and the number of victims last year increased compared with the same period in 2012, the provincial Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (DoLISA) reported.

Accordingly, 1,690 work accidents happened in the province last year, killed 26 people and injured 1,691 others.
Compared with the same period in 2012, the number of occupational accidents increased by 66, the number of injuries rose by 33 people while the number of deaths fell by 1.
According to DoLISA, lack of labour safety equipment, obsolete machinery and indifferent management attitudes about work safety are resulting in increases in the number of labour accidents.
The other causes of labour accidents were related to a lack of safety training among workers as well as safety violations by workers as well as the low rate of workers receiving health examinations for early diagnosis of occupational diseases.
To reduce the number of occupational accidents, the province should take drastic measures to deal with the issue, including ramping up inspections to find out whether safety regulations are being followed.
Stricter punishments for violators as well as improving working conditions, providing health care to labourers, reducing environmental pollution and occupational diseases related to bad working conditions and raising awareness among workers on occupational safety may also reduce accidents and deaths .
Director Le Thi My Phuong of DoLISA said that the department has set up seven inspection teams and they will examine measures against work place accidents, including fires and explosions at businesses and factories in the province.
The inspection will target high risk enterprises and enterprises which have been fined several times during the last year for violations in labour safety and fire prevention.If these businesses are found to have violated the law again, they will be shut down.
