The construction of Long Thanh international airport in Dong Nai province will cost around US$5.6 billion, depending on its scale, said the Transport Ministry.

The construction of Long Thanh international airport in Dong Nai province will cost around US$5.6 billion, depending on its scale, said the Transport Ministry.

The ministry on Monday held a seminar to collect feedback on the project, which is expected to be built on 5,000 hectares of land in Long Thanh district.

The total investment in the project will be $4 billion if the airport is designed to have only one runway and a terminal, but the cost will increase to $5.6 billion if it is larger, the ministry said.

“The ministry will mobilize all possible capital sources to begin building the airport in 2015,” said Lai Xuan Thanh , head of the Airline Department.

Upon completion, the airport will be able to serve 80-100 million passengers per year and handle 5 million tons of cargo per year, Thanh said.

The plan to build the airport received a go-ahead from the government in August 2011. The terminal is expected to be capable of competing with other large airports in Southeast Asia.

Its construction will be implemented in three stages, with the first one expected to start in 2015.

The airport is scheduled to become operational by 2020, and will be capable of handling 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year.

The figures are expected to reach 100 million passengers and 5 million tons in the last stage, starting in 2030.

The terminal will be able to receive large aircraft such as the A380-800.

Dong Nai authorities have recently also unveiled a development plan for the 21,000 hectare area surrounding the upcoming airport, the largest such facility in Vietnam.

Under the plan, the area will include a tourism complex, several industrial clusters, and world-class sporting, education and health care facilities.
