The Ministry of Transport signed a VND4.6 trillion (US$209million) contract on the first component project to upgrade National Highway 20 yesterday.
At the signing ceremony, Minister Dinh La Thang asked investors and contractors to carry out the project quickly because after 30 years, the highway connecting the Southeast to the Central Highlands has seriously degraded.
Under the contract, the component project of the highway connecting southern Dong Nai Province's Dau Giay junction and the Central Highlands' Lam Dong Province Highway 725 would be built under Build and Transfer manner.
The construction is 123.1 km long. It is part of the two components project with a total investment of more than 7.6 trillion ($345million), which connects Dau Giay junction and National Highway 27 in Lam Dong Province with a total length of 268km.
According to the design, the construction basically follows the current National Highway 20 design except for some local diversions, which are designed with higher standards in mind. The design also allowed for 16 new bridges and needed a site clearance of over 263 ha in the region.
In addition, the highway plays an important role in shipping products for Nhan Co Bauxite Complex and meeting transport demand in the two provinces.
Thus Thang asked constructors and investors to do their best to ensure that construction progressed both quickly and thoroughly.
The project was assigned to the Management Board 7 under Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam while the investors were Cuu Long Traffic Investment, Development and Management Joint Venture and Mekong East Co, Petroleum and Construction Joint Stock Company, and Construction Materials No 1 Corporation.
