Authorities in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province agreed Monday to support farmers in Tan Thanh District to sue MSG maker Vedan Viet Nam for losses it caused by polluting the Thi Vai River.
At a Monday meeting, the Tan Thanh District Peoples Committee and the relevant departments and agencies agreed to hire lawyers to represent 1,255 affected Tan Thanh farmers to sue Vedan for VND53 billion (US$2.7 million).
The paperwork for the lawsuit against the Taiwanese-owned company would be prepared by July 20, they said.

On April 9 the Provincial Peoples Committee had ordered Vedan to compensate the farmers a total of VND53 billion, but Vedan only agreed to pay VND10 billion.
On June 21, the Dong Nai Province Peoples Committee asked Vedan to pay pollution compensation of VND119.58 billion ($6.2 million) to farmers in Long Thanh and Nhon Trach districts by the end of this month.
In its press release on Monday, Vedan said it did not agree with the ordered compensation amount.
