Two students from Dong Nai based Vocational College No.8 to attend 7th ASEAN Skills Competition

This is a story about two poor young men who come from poor villages in the north and are now students at Vocational College No.8. They are named Cu Huy Huan and Dang Nguyen Cuong.

This is a story about two poor young men who come from poor villages in the north and are now students at Vocational College No.8. They are named Cu Huy Huan and Dang Nguyen Cuong. Cu Huy Huan was born and grew up in a poor village of Huong Son district in Ha Tinh province. In his chidhood, he often went to sit down at the pavement where he could look motor cars running on the road. In 2006, Tuan left for Bien Hoa city to study at Vocational College No.8 in order to pursue his dream to become an auto repair worker.

Dang Nguyen Cuong grew up in a poor village of Quang Binh province. Cuong was not lucky as was Huan, Cuong only watched cars on television. Cuong got the opportunity to pursue his dream when he entered the Vocational College No.8.

Meeting at the vocational college, discovering that they have the same dream, and nurturing, pursuing, Huan and Cuong rapidly became best friends.   

Of 24 students in the class, Huan and Cuong receive more attention from their teacher because they study very hard and try to absorb as much knowledge as they can.

Huan and Cuong took first place at the 5th Vocational Skill Competition in Dong Nai in June. They were selected to compete in the National Vocational Skills Competition that took place in July in Ha Noi. A total of 347 contestants from 39 localities and six ministries and branches competed at the National Vocational Skills Competition 2008. This year’s competition aimed to select skilled contestants for the seventh ASEAN Vocational Skills Competition in Malaysia in November 2008 and the 40th World Vocational Skills Competition in Calgary , Canada , in September 2009. During the five-day competition, contestants competed in five new skills, namely mechatronics, web design, graphic design technology, refrigeration and beauty care. The others included welding, civil electricity, industrial electronics, information technology’ software applications, computer aided drawing and design (CADD), cooking, restaurant service, wall and floor tiling, bricklaying, cabinet making, joinery, ladies dress making, automobile technology and plumbing.

Huan and Cuong were gold and silver medal winners respectively at the National Vocational Skills Competition 2008. They are selected to attend the 7th ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) at the Malaysian Construction Academy in Cheras from November 14-16.

Among the categories were automobile technology, beauty therapy, bricklaying, cabinet making, graphic design technology, industrial electronics and dressmaking. This is the first time that all the 10 ASEAN countries would be taking part in the competition but only Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam would be competing in all categories.

Huan and Cuong know they will face challenges in the 7th ASEAN Skills Competition but they will try to prove their talents and use the best way possible.
