Disabled people in Dong Nai province received 190 wheelchairs as gifts from US Global Community Service Foundation (GCSF) in cooperation with Dong Nai Newspaper and Thien Ha Service Commercial Company Limited on April 16. The wheelchairs are a few of the 550 wheelchairs, worth a total of around VND600 million, that the GCSF have donated to disabled people in Vietnam.

After arriving in early April, the wheelchairs were assembled and are given to the recipients this week. Volunteers from Thien Ha and Vy Phuong companies also helped in the effort.

126 wheelchairs were presented to beneficiaries in Tay Ninh province, while 157 others were given to handicapped people in Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Tien Giang provinces. The remaining wheelchairs will be handed out in the provinces of Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Ben Tre, Dak Lak, and HCM city in the near time.

The Global Community Service Foundation is a Washington DC-based non-profit organisation that works to reduce poverty in Southeast Asia through the development and implementation of sustainable community-based projects in Myanmar and Vietnam. During three years of operation in Vietnam, the GCSF donated more than 1,600 wheelchairs to disabled people across the  country.

More than 5 million physically disabled are living in Vietnam today, some of them Agent Orange victims and others seriously injured by landmine or unexploded ordnance left after the war.
