The Prime Minister has given the nod to a scheme to protect the Dong Nai river basin environment.
The scheme is designed to increase the river’s water quality, balance the water supply for daily use and irrigation, and protect the basin’s biodiversity.
Under the scheme, the Dong Nai Basin Environment Protection Committee will be set up by 2010 and all new production establishments will be required to use environmentally-friendly technology.
Eighty percent of hi-tech, industrial and export processing zones and 40 percent of new residential zones must also have concentrated waste water treatment facilities.
From 2016 until 2020, at least 70 percent of residential areas and all hi-tech, industrial and export processing zones will have concentrated waste water treatment systems.
The scheme also plans to increase forest coverage of the basin to 50 percent.
