"Most believe in the quality of service, especially, poor rural women. They reap much benefit from it."
The intended provision of a free ultrasound scan and medicine specific to gynecological disorders will further enhance the service, Dr Thu says.
The three-month pro-gramme in Dong Nai – a province with a high birth rate – began on August 1 and is now available in all of its 171 communes.
Provincial administrators have given the programme an extra VND100 million that will be used to provide 4,000 women with a free ultrasound scan.
And each communes has contributed from VND500,000 to VND1 million in response to an appeal of
Women’s Union officials have contributed by encouraging women to visit clinics.
Population, Family and Children Committee statistics show that programme provided free morning-after pills for more than 47,900 pregnant women and condoms for 59,000 men during the 15 first days.
In all, 2,500 pregnant women were examined, 2,300 others vaccinated against tetanus while 20,000 had their reproductive health checked.
Dong Nai Population, Family and Children Committee deputy chairman Dr Huynh Cao Hai says the decision by the provincial administrators to provide some free services ensures the quantity and quality of the programme will improve.
"The programme is indispensable for many poor, rural women who are reluctant to visit health clinics," he says.
"They find it difficult to avail themselves of a high-quality medical programmes."
