Driving businesses toward green production

In line with its commitments made at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), Vietnam will achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Accordingly, the Government has required ministries, sectors and localities to develop roadmaps for gradually reducing carbon emissions. Within this context, Dong Nai has emerged as one of the pioneering provinces nationwide in issuing policies in pursuit of the net-zero target.

In February 2024, the Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 385/QD-UBND approving a project on carbon emission reduction in Dong Nai through 2030, with a vision to 2050. Under the project, seven high-emission sectors have been identified for focused action, including transport, industry, energy, environment, agriculture, forestry and land use, construction and materials, as well as urban areas. Building on the project, each sector has developed its own emission reduction roadmap, emphasizing the use of recycled materials, energy efficiency and the transition towards green and circular production.

As a major hub for both industrial and agricultural production, with hundreds of projects under construction, Dong Nai generates thousands of tonnes of waste daily. Therefore, the province has placed strong emphasis on converting waste into energy and input materials for various industries. Notably, several enterprises have taken the lead in adopting recycled inputs and energy-saving solutions to meet green and circular production standards. Several have gone further, developing smart, environmentally friendly factories moving steadily towards net zero, including Dong Tien, SMC, Bosch, Nestle and Schaeffler.

More broadly, most sectors in Dong Nai are now engaged in the race to net zero, which is considered one of key criteria for the province to achieve the goal of becoming a modern, civilized and sustainable city.

In recent years, Dong Nai has introduced various policies to encourage enterprises to invest in and apply science and technology in production and business activities, thereby reducing carbon emissions while improving productivity and product quality. This move also reflects the growing requirements of international brands when seeking partners in Dong Nai and across Viet Nam.

In reality, those enterprises that have taken the lead in green and circular production have found it easier to access both domestic and international markets, resulting in more stable product output. In the construction sector in particular, the province encourages enterprises to use environmentally friendly materials. In addition, the province has called for both domestic and foreign enterprises to invest in waste treatment across industrial, agricultural and residential sectors. Several investors have already developed projects that convert waste into electricity and production inputs.

According to economic experts, with the right technology in place, waste can be transformed into a valuable resource, serving as energy, recycled materials or fertilizers. Effective waste treatment and reuse not only help reduce environmental pollution but also conserve natural resources, promote a circular economy and enhance resilience to climate change.

To achieve the net-zero target by 2050, each sector and industry in Dong Nai will need to step up efforts in implementing green transition plans. Equally important, the province should introduce more practical support policies for businesses, including preferential loans, timely resolution of policy bottlenecks, technology transfer, high-quality workforce training and stronger symbiosis among enterprises.
